Emergent simplicity despite local complexity in eroding fluvial landscapes

چکیده
Abstract Much of our current understanding continental topographic evolution is rooted in measuring and predicting the rates at which rivers erode landscape. Flume tank field observations indicate that stochasticity local conditions play important roles determining small scales (e.g., <10 km, thousands years). Obversely, preserved river profiles common shapes atop uplifting topography erosion are predictable larger scales. These response to forcing can be scale dependent. I demonstrate erosional thresholds provide an explanation for why profile very complicated unique yet simple large

Coupled length scales in eroding landscapes.
We report results from an empirical study of the anisotropic structure of eroding landscapes. By constructing a novel correlation function, we show quantitatively that small-scale channel-like features of landscapes are coupled to the large-scale structure of drainage basins. We show additionally that this two-scale interaction is scale-dependent. The latter observation suggests that a commonly...
متن کاملFluvial landscapes of the Harappan civilization.
The collapse of the Bronze Age Harappan, one of the earliest urban civilizations, remains an enigma. Urbanism flourished in the western region of the Indo-Gangetic Plain for approximately 600 y, but since approximately 3,900 y ago, the total settled area and settlement sizes declined, many sites were abandoned, and a significant shift in site numbers and density towards the east is recorded. We...
متن کاملSpirolaterals, Complexity from Simplicity
This paper investigates spirolaterals for their beauty of form and the unexpected complexity arising from them. From a very simple generative procedure, spirolaterals can be created having great complexity and variation. Using mathematical and computer-based methods, issues of closure, variation, enumeration, and predictictability are discussed. A historical review is also included. The overrid...
متن کاملSimplicity and Complexity in Contracts
Standard economic models of contract imply that contracts should be highly “complex,” by which we mean (1) rich in the expected number of payoff-relevant contingencies; (2) variable in the magnitude of payoffs contracted to flow between parties; and (3) severe in the cognitive load necessary to understand the contract. Yet most realworld contracts are simple along all three of these dimensions....
متن کاملComplexity, simplicity, and epidemiology.
It should be stressed that although many phenomena are complex, 15 the concept of ‘complexity’ is more specific. Complexity is the study of complex adaptive systems. These have been defined as ‘a collection of individual agents with freedom to act in ways that are not always totally predictable, and whose actions are interconnected so that one agent’s actions changes the context for other agent...
